Brazilian Body Language
I -
Obscene
| |
Money Expensive
Hold your hand up towards your
chest or a little higher and rub your thumb against your index
finger to indicate that something is expensive.
| |
Negation No
Shake your hand and arm from
side to side, with index finger extended to indicate "no."
You can also shake your head sideways at the same time. To
scold a child, the finger is pointed and shaken at the child.
Saco Cheio
Hold your cupped hands in front
of your lower body and shake them. This gesture means "my
balls are full" (the anatomical reference is clear...) and
has become so commonplace that, depending on the circumstances,
it's not obscene at all (and it's used by women also). It's
best to avoid it, though.
| |
Come Here
This means "come here." Extend
your arm with the hand turned up or down and flex your fingers
a few times. Also accompanied by the words "psiu, psiu."
Telephone
Hold your hand against your face
like this to say someone's on the phone, or that she has a
phone call (which this popular young beauty does, all the
time!).
| |
Banana
This is called "dar uma banana" or give a banana and it means
"screw you!", so use your discretion...It's probably better
to avoid it, so you don't get into a fight, but I always taught
it to my students, as part of their general education in Brazilian
culture. |
Good Luck
Figa The "figa" is NOT obscene
in Brazil. It's done for good luck, for protection against
bad luck. The equivalent of crossing your fingers in the US.
The figa is also worn as a charm on a bracelet or chain.
| |
Enthusiastic or Sympathetic Delicious
Here's a cute one. Tug at your
earlobe like this when you think something is delicious. Usually
accompanied by the expression "é daqui!" Normally used only
with food.
| |
Poor thing, you're jealous!
Rub a hand under your elbow to
indicate that someone is jealous. He or she is suffering from
"dor de cotovelo." It literally means elbow pain. One explanation
is that when you feel down you sit for a long time with your
elbows on the table and they get sore...
| |
She's got it made!
Put your thumbs under your armpits
and wiggle your fingers to indicate that you or someone else
is living the good life.
| |
Disbelief Watch Out
Gently pull the eyelid down to
indicate one of two things, depending on the situation:"watch
out, be careful, keep your eyes open" or "do you think I'm
stupid to believe that?" Usually accompanied by the words
"aqui, ó!"
| |
Closeness Close
Rub the two index fingers together
like this to indicate close friendship between two people.
Used by children and adults alike.
